8th Grade Mathematics Course Syllabus

2011 Fall Semester

Course Description:

The curriculum offers students the opportunity to experience real-world applications, hands-on labs and interdisciplinary investigations.  All students will be actively engaged in developing mathematical understandings in real and relevant contexts.  By the end of 8th grade, students will be able to:

  • Understand various numerical representations, including square roots, exponents and scientific notation
  • Use and apply geometric properties of plane figures, including Pythagorean theorem
  • Use symbolic algebra to represent situations and solve problems, especially those that involve linear relationships
  • Solve linear equations, systems of linear equations and inequalities
  • Use and understand set theory and simple counting techniques
  • Determine the theoretical probability of simple events
  • Make inferences from statistical data, particularly data that can be modeled by linear functions

Textbook: Pearson/Prentice Hall Connected Mathematics2 – Grade 8 (Cost: $69).  If the textbook is lost, stolen, or damaged (missing barcode), it is the student’s responsibility to pay for the book before a replacement book is issued.  In the event that the lost book is found, please retain all receipts.

Standardized Test Requirements: Standards are embedded throughout the curriculum, which would aid students on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT).  Students must earn a minimum score of 800.  Students must make at least an 800 on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) to be promoted to ninth grade.

The DeKalb County School System Grading Scale

A:  100-90   B: 80-89     C: 71-79

D: 70 (Partially met the expectation)

F: 69 and below (Unsatisfactory; did not meet the expectation)

Weighted Averages

Class work:  30% (i.e. Journals, GPS Tasks, Investigations, CMP2 Reflections, Activities)

Assessments: 40% (i.e. Chapter tests, Quizzes, Performance Assessments)

Homework: 10% (i.e. CMP2 Ace Problems, Mini-Projects, Reinforcement Activities, Pizzazz Worksheets)

Portfolio: 10% (i.e. Georgia Performance Tasks, Projects, Student Selected Assignments)

Final: 10% (i.e. Cumulative Semester Exam, all objectives will be assessed)

  • Homework- Homework is expected to be completed as assigned.  If the parent approves, student should collaborate with study buddy on difficult concepts.
  • Make-up work:  Announced work, such as homework, quizzes, tests, and other major assessments are due the day the student returns.  For each day’s excused absence, student will have one day to make up missed work.  If a student is absent under extenuating circumstances, special arrangements can be made to make up work.  IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO REQUEST MISSED WORK.
  • Academic honesty:  Receiving or giving information for an assignment is cheating, and when caught in the act, students will not receive credit nor receive the opportunity for a chance for make up.  Plagiarism is not acceptable. If a student takes information from the Internet or any printed resource without a citation, it is considered plagiarism and will result in a reduction in grade.  A referral to the appropriate assistant principal will be forwarded.
